About Southwinds Stable

  Our Founder

Suzanne M. Clement

Suzy began her stable in 1993 at age 13 when she made the decision to convert her love and passion for horses to a life long enterprise.

With the help of her dad, mom and brother, Suzy created a State of Connecticut LLC Corporation for the purpose of Breeding Dutch Warm Bloods and Quality Sport Horses.

When Suzy's favorite thoroughbred jumper was injured, she decided to breed the mare rather

than sell her. A long and fruitful search was made for the right stallion to complement "Angel's" characteristics. The results are history. Suzy selected Rolls Royce and the foal - Ollamberr- placed 6th in the North America Dutch Keurings. An envious beginning that strengthened Suzy's convictions to proceed in fulfilling her dream.

Through her high school years, Suzy bred year after year, producing at least three foals a season.  All of her get was shown at  NA/WPN events and all of Suzy's foals had shown remarkable well, winning first or second premiums at all the Dutch Keurings entered - and again, one placing in the Top 10 in North America.  Some have placed very well in the yearly New England Dressage Shows.

Prior to her involvement with the breeding of Dutch Warm Bloods, Suzy rode since age 5.  She was a serious contender in the "Hills of CT.", Winning consistently one championship after another.

Suzy has also added to her long list of awards, the prestigious Connecticut State FFA Proficiency Award Recognition for Equine Science and repeated this feat several times.

Suzy's first horses were a father and son acquired from the humane society.  They had been badly neglected and left in a field to die.  Suzy and her trainer started to care for them in the month of November and by June, with Suzy's round the clock care, she was able to ride the horses in limited competition.  Two years later, Suzy sold both sound and healthy Geldings and acquired one of her most cherished horses ever . . . Tom Dooly.  She was only 8 years old.

Experience and exposure to horses has been gained by Suzy with her involvement in the Pony Club, FFA and 4-H Clubs.  Suzy even started her own 4-H Club.  She had worked with veterinarians for several summers . . . being involved with all aspects of equine rehabilitation and reproduction.  Suzy also attended Northeast Community College for additional certification.

Her skill in all areas of horsemanship, as well as her vast breeding background, coupled with her love for children (Suzy has 3) enables her to be that perfect FIRST INSTRUCTOR for youngsters, as well for adults seeking to learn the joys of horse riding and care.
